Chapter Thirteen.

Gina called Trevor as she had promised. The first thing she wanted to know was if Trevor was going to stop lying to her and tell her the truth about his absence. He assured her that he couldn’t lie to her and he hadn’t lied to her.

"So you are going to persist in this ridiculous story?"

"Gina, you want the truth don’t you? I am telling you the truth," he said. "In a few days time I will be able to prove it to you. A week at the most."

There was silence for a moment, then he heard her quietly crying.

"Trust me, Gina. Please trust me." There was another moment’s silence.

"All right, Trevor," Gina said quietly. "Prove it to me but in the meantime, I don’t think we should see each other. Call me when you have the proof."

Trevor knew she didn’t believe he would or could provide proof to back up his story.

"Goodbye, Trevor," she said. He heard her crying a moment before she cut the connection.

Three days later the six clones, three male and three female, were completed. Trevor had made some adjustments to the program information fed into the clones brains from time to time. During those three days, Gordon persistently attempted to get Trevor to explain why he wanted his sub-consciousness uploaded into the clones but all Trevor would tell his friend was that it was for good purpose. Once the clones were completed, Trevor finally asked Gordon a question.

"If you knew that there was a possibility of the human race being destroyed and you knew how to save it, would you?"

"Well, yes, of course I would," answered Gordon. "But what has that got to do with interfering with the clones?"

"These six are going to help save the human race, Gordon." Trevor looked at his friend straight in the eyes to see what his reaction would be.

They had been friends from the day they both started working in the laboratory. Both had come from the same line of four clones created specifically to work at The World Population Control Center. The impact of Trevor’s statement numbed Gordon for a minute. He knew Trevor would never lie to him but at the same time he knew that Trevor should have informed Gardner of what he knew before attempting to interfere with the clones.

"How? How are they going to save the world?" he asked. "Why couldn’t this wait until Gardner came back?"

"Gina didn’t believe me when I told her what I knew and where I have been. Do you think Gardner would?"

"Try me, Trev. We are friends. Almost brothers," Gordon pleaded. He didn’t know just how badly Trevor wanted to tell him. Trevor thought for a moment. Dare he tell Gordon? Would he report him? Would the authorities come and erase his mind before his work was completed? He still had some work to do before the six clones were released from the tubes.

"I was kidnapped by aliens," he announced. Gordon studied Trevor’s face for some indication that he was kidding. Trevor calmly waited for Gordon’s response.

"Aliens. As in aliens from outer space?" asked Gordon.

"Aliens. As in aliens from outer space," echoed Trevor.

"As in little green men in flying saucers?"

Trevor just smiled and Gordon burst out laughing.

"Okay. You don’t want to tell me. That’s fine," he said once he had calmed down. "But you know that if I am ever asked about these clones, I am going to have to tell about it, don’t you?"

"Naturally, Gordon. And if that happens, I won’t deny it. I accept all responsibility," replied Trevor. "You were just obeying my instructions."

Trevor got up from the master console and stretched. "That’s it." he muttered to himself. He had spent long hours, sitting at the console checking and altering the original programs designed for the six clones. Long hours of playing back, analysing and filtering the sub-consciousness Gordon and he had installed in them until only certain elements remained.

Clones developed their own sub-consciences once they began to live outside the tubes. Trevor only wanted these clones to have a part of his installed. Hence, the laborious work of filtering out all but small parts he wanted them to possess.

Now, at last the work was finished. Gordon and his colleagues had gone to their homes and he was alone in the laboratory.

He went to each tube in turn, as he had done countless times during the last few days, standing and just looking at the lifeless clones. Three males and three females. All with perfect bodies as accepted by The World Government authorities. Perfect in every detail just as his own and all clones bodies were. Unlike the days of old when clones were all identical, the ones created now had different features, different personalities and different minds. Minds filled with all the knowledge that any well-educated human of thirty-five years old would have plus the skills to do the specified work that The World Government required. Now, thought Trevor, these have a little extra.

Chapter Fourteen.

Trevor secured the doors to the laboratory and caught a hovercab to his apartment. It was already in the early hours of the morning but his mind was too busy thinking of his next move in his plan to feel tired. Going into the bedroom, he lay down and concentrated on Meehun.

"Meehun. Are you there?"

"Yes, Trevor," Meehun’s voice sounded in Trevor’s head, "how are you?"

"Things haven’t gone too well for me here. Gina doesn’t believe me about you and the Neumites. If she doesn’t believe me, I am sure The World Government won’t either."

"We didn’t think it would be easy for you, Trevor. Human’s are a suspicious people."

"Meehun. I have a plan but it will mean you helping. All of you, maybe."

"What can we do? What is the plan?"

"Can’t you read my mind?" asked Trevor. He thought it would be easier than revealing all the details in a conversation.

"You will have to sleep for me to go so deeply," Meehun said, apologetically. "It is not like surface thoughts."

"Then put me to sleep and get on with it," Replied Trevor, "then let me know what you think."

"Sleep, Trevor." Meehun’s response was immediate and Trevor slept.

The sound of the speaking clock woke Trevor. He felt refreshed even though he had only slept a few hours. His immediate thoughts were on Meehun and whether the Neumites could assist him in his plan. He again concentrated on Meehun but it was Losin that answered.

"Hello, Trevor. Meehun and Neegon are having a meeting with the others. How are you?"

Losin’s warm voice was like a refreshing breeze on a hot and humid day. He realised that he missed her.

"I’m fine, Losin. How are you?"

"We are fine, too, Trevor. The little one inside me grows and develops well. Bonding with my mind." Her excited voice reflected the happiness she felt about their unborn child.

"Meehun informed us of your problems with Gina. I am so sorry. I know you must be hurting."

"I was foolish to expect her to believe," replied Trevor. "I am hoping Meehun can help."

"They are discussing it now. They won’t let me into their minds because the little one is so precious to our people. They don’t want to take any chances. Baheen is also pregnant. We share our happiness daily."

"I have to go to work, Losin." Although he would have loved to continue talking to Losin, he still had much to do and time was passing.

"I know, Trevor. We will talk again soon, I am sure of it." She left his mind and he felt suddenly very lonely.

Trevor and Gordon hoisted the first clone from the tube it had been in and lay it on a hospital trolley bed. It was a female with brown, shoulder-length hair, about five foot eight inches in height. As he looked at her, Trevor mentally compared her to the Neumite women. Her full, exquisite body would make her look like an Amazon in comparison. It was only then that he realised his own physique must have appeared pretty awesome to the Neumites when they first saw him.

"According to the files she is to be an architect," said Gordon as he placed a numbered band on her wrist. He beckoned one of his colleagues. It was now the job of another department to revive the woman and extensively check her health, a process that would take at least two hours. Yet another department would supply her initial clothing and issue her with necessary credentials, credit card and an apartment in one of the many housing blocks for clones. She would not be required to work until she had accustomed herself to being a live human, that was usually two weeks with periodic health and mental examinations every two days.

"You know where to take her, Harry" he said to the clone that responded to his beckoning. Harry smiled and wheeled her out of the department.

They went through the same process with the remaining five clones. As each one was laid out on a trolley, Trevor stood and looked at them, mentally taking in all the details of their features so he would recognise then another time.

Trevor called each of the other department and asked to be informed when each clone had been processed. It was an unusual request but both departments assured him their would inform him.

"We had better start doing the others," Trevor told Gordon. "We have just got time to prepare the consoles before we leave. I want to leave as early as I can today."

"Gina?" Gordon asked, raising his eyes and grinning. He had noticed Trevor hadn’t spoken much about her since he had been back. Trevor took a deep breath and blew it out slowly.

"No. We are not seeing each other for a while."

Gordon looked at him with that screwed up, up-and-under look he often used.

"Lover’s quarrel?" he asked.

"A bit more than that," replied Trevor, sighing. "But it will be all right. I’m working on it."

"So what’s the rush to get home? Got a date with another girl?" Clones, both male and female, had no trouble getting dates. Their perfect physiques and attractive looks drew the attentions of the opposite sex and they could more or less choose whomever they wanted. Gordon dated a different girl almost every week. Trevor didn’t think he would ever settle down with just one even though some of his choices got him in trouble with other men.

"No! I just have things to do," answered Trevor.

"Want any help? Maybe to fight off those aliens for you. Kyeeee!" He did a few karate chops in the air then guffawed. Trevor grinned back at him. He and Gordon had had a lot fun together in the five years they had been created.

"I’ll call you if I need you," said Trevor. "Let’s finish up here."
